Though Walter Hiott loves his home town of Charleston, SC, he also loves to visit new cities, countries, and sites. This website is dedicated to his love of travel. Over the years, Walter has travelled quite extensively around the United States, across the Atlantic to Europe, and to many beautiful islands in the Caribbean and elsewhere. Some of the greatest trips with his family have been to visit the natural beauty and wonder of National Parks.
Without even leaving the United States, one can travel to any number of amazing and varied locations, from the sparse yet beautiful desert landscape surrounding Tucson to the most urban of environments like New York City, and quite a lot in between. San Francisco, for example, offers both a unique and interesting city, and easy access to the scenic natural beauty of the Muir Woods, Wine Country, and Pacific Coast Highway. San Diego is another wonderful city, and even a native Charlestonian like Walter Hiott will admit that you’d be hard pressed to find a better place to call home. Moving east, one can experience the Americana of Memphis on a trip to Graceland, a place that should be on
everyone’s bucket list. On the East Coast, there are many exceptionally unique and relaxing beach communities including Myrtle Beach, Carolina Beach, and Cape Cod, where whale watching is another bucket list caliber experience. These are, of course, in addition to the historic cities along the Eastern Seaboard, some of which have been the commercial centers of American life for centuries.
In addition to the above mentioned locations in America (and several more), Walter Hiott has travelled in Europe to Ireland, London, and Paris. He spent three weeks touring the Emerald Island, a nickname that Ireland certainly deserves, because even in January the countryside is bursting with green. London is a city with so much history and with so much to do that even a couple of weeks there is too little time. Paris, as everyone knows, just has it. From the Seine and
the outdoor cafes, to the museums and cathedrals, to the cheese and bread, there is not much more one could ask for from a vacation or a city. Even a simple activity like walking the streets up to Montmartre seems infused with a mysticism and magic. The restaurant atop the Eiffel Tower is very romantic, but then again, not much about Paris isn’t.
One can also vacation quite nicely while traveling to some of the beautiful islands in the Caribbean and Florida Keys. Key West, all at once, offers the stunning beauty of the Caribbean with the vivacious atmosphere of New Orleans, which is a hard combination to beat. Driving to Key West in a convertible is also another one of those experiences for the bucket list. St. John, St. Thomas, and Eleuthera are scenic wonders with white sandy beaches, turquoise water, and incredible snorkelling. Walter Hiott has also travelled to Haiti, a trip which he says can instill in someone a profound appreciation for what they are blessed with.
Trips like those so far mentioned are certainly enjoyable, and sometimes quite luxurious. But some of the vacations Walter Hiott and his family have enjoyed most have been excursions into the Great Outdoors. Their all time favorite family vacation was to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. Travelling through the parks in an RV, they saw the Teton mountain range, Old Faithful, freely roaming bison, and scenic rivers. The beautiful architecture of the Old Faithful Inn, though a man made achievement among all the natural beauty, was an added bonus.
Probably the only thing better than travelling to a new place and experiencing its environment and culture is the feeling of returning home to Charleston, a top notch vacation destination in itself.
This is but an abbreviated summary of Walter Hiott’s travels. Feel free to check the blog page of this website for additional travel experiences and stories.
